  • submitted an article in 8/2011; 1 reader report received in 1/2012--was told that the other had failed to submit their report, but that the article would be accepted for publication; the report was good, although not terribly detailed; editorial support seems to be weak; and recent emails have gone unanswered

  • I had a very poor experience with this journal. My paper was under review for quite some time—about a year—before I received feedback. It was accepted with Major Revisions (AJH does not do revise and resubmit), and I was only given about six weeks to revise. One reviewers' comments were very helpful, the other's less so, and implied that my original ideas were borrowed from other scholars (who the reviewer did not specify). The second reviewer's feedback was disorganized, written in lowercase with poor grammar (perhaps written on a phone?). This along with the unsupported accusation that my ideas were not original probably should have been a sign for me to resubmit elsewhere. After another year from resubmission, the journal decided not to publish my article. Reviewer two sent almost the exact same feedback as s/he did to my first draft even though I made major changes to it. I have no idea why I was only given six weeks to revise my paper when the reviewers did not even look at the revision until nine months later. Reviewer one's feedback helped me improve the article, but overall I had a very bad experience between the slow timeline, poor communication, a sloppy/not very nice reviewer, and acceptance followed by rejection. I wish I had pulled the article and submitted elsewhere. I do not recommend submitted to AJH—there are plenty of other journals that are more timely and organized.American Journal of Ancient History | Journal Web Site

  • sent in article and it was acknowledged as received. Months and months went by, no word. Wrote to inquire; managing editor had no idea of status. Promised to look into it; no word. Finally, one year after submitting, received a rejection letter from editor SBW. They had never even sent it out for review, yet they sat on it for a year. The rejection letter was a masterpiece of condescension, explaining to me what 'American Studies' is.. Though I have a phd in the field, from ivy league school (unlike the editor, whose field was communications, btw). All in all, very unprofessional for the top journal in my field. A tremendous disappointment.
  • I had a fairly positive experience with this journal in early 2017. Although my paper was not sent out for peer review, I received the rejection within eight weeks and the editor had obviously read my piece rather thoroughly.

American Studies (University of Kansas) | Journal Web Site

  • I submitted an article in August 2015 through the journal's online submission form. I got a confirmation it had been received. After a few months, it was marked as under review, which is where it has stayed for more than one year. I requested an update after a few months. Nothing. Another request, again, no response. I wrote at the beginning of December that if I did not hear from the journal by the 20th, I would pull my article. Still nothing. Ironically, a friend of mine was complaining on Facebook about a terrible experience with a journal that sounded just like mine. Turns out, he had submitted to American Studies as well. He pulled his article and got it accepted at another journal within weeks. Don't submit to this journal, folks!

The Americas: a quarterly review of Inter-American cultural history | Journal Web Site

  • They have been fantastic. I submitted in August 2010, and got reader reports back by early January. Although it took me awhile to finish them, I finally resubmitted November 2011. Heard back after board meeting in December, and it will be published this July. They've been lovely to work with!

  • Submitted article in early August 2017; sent to peer review but no feedback received; requested update in November only to receive a terse reply "It's under review."; still no decision or feedback by end of January 2018; withdrew submission

  • Great experience with this journal. Received 3 detailed reader's reports after 4 months, recommending R&R. After I sent in the revised version, further reviews came in after about 3 months, recommending more minor revisions. Article was accepted after I completed those revisions and came out just under a year later. It was a long process, but the editor and referees really worked with me to define and improve the article. Their feedback was invaluable.
  • Incredibly slow but also very thorough journal. Received 3 extremely helpful reviewers reports after about 8 months, recommending minor revisions. I made major revisions and resubmitted, receiving another excellent round of comments five months later. The article was accepted a month later, and about a year after that it was published. If you have a long postdoc / are at the start of your PhD, definitely go for this as the feedback really improved my article. Stay clear if you are an ECR looking to publish in a hurry as wait time can exceed two years. Worth adding that they explicitly ignore any emails asking for updates on review / publication dates, but will reply promptly to other queries.

  • Initial review took almost three months, and then a polite rejection letter, but without a feedback.
  • Very positive experience publishing here, with good feedback from editors and reviewers. Detailed timeline: Submitted manuscript early August 2016; editors sent it out for peer review in September; reviews returned with a revise-and-resubmit decision by the end of November. I sent in the revision late January 2017; second round of review completed in March, official acceptance in April 2017; published January 2018.
  • Communication with managing editor was difficult prior to submission. Desk rejection six weeks after submission. Form letter rejection from chief editors was polite but gave only a standard list of the various reasons for desk rejections. So, overall an inefficient submission process and an efficient but unhelpful process of desk review. Probably wouldn't try with them again, particularly for articles intended for non-specialists (I think their typical accepted articles are more narrowly focused than they think they are).
  • My experience with them was during the pandemic so response times likely affected by this. Nonetheless: I submitted, got three reviews back about nine months later with revise and resubmit. Took about a month to resubmit, got acceptance one month later. Then my article was in the pipeline (because of backlog) for a year. So, great journal, great editors, but reconsider if you have some time pressure.

  • Submitted in September 2018, was notified that it was sent for peer review 2 weeks after and received a decision in early December. Unfortunately it was a rejection but there was very good feedback from the reviewers who really engaged with all aspects of the piece so I felt that I got something fruitful out of it and it wasn't a waste of time.

  • extremely detailed and engaged commentary from editor for two different drafts of piece that originally received R&R and was ultimately rejected (2008); I advised others to submit to this journal as well, and although their work was also turned down (2010), I know that detailed comments were offered; there is a lot to respect in how this journal handles submissions and in the overall integrity of the editorial process

History Compass | Journal Web Site

  • does not accept cold submissions; articles are either commissioned by guest editors or a query of interest should be sent before writing for them. The review was fairly quick (comments within 2 weeks; this was in late 2020), and acceptance of revisions-to-publication is quick (8-12 weeks). The submission process, however, is extremely frustrating. The website is entirely unclear in cases (for example: the cover sheet must contain the title, abstract, and keywords, and the author's name, institution, title -- and something called an "informational," which is apparently different from, and does not contain, any of the other pieces requested. I e-mailed to ask what this should look like and received no response; the website also did not specify that submissions need to be uploaded as Word documents). This caused no end of frustration as I would get e-mail overnight from the production office asking for things to be redone in a previously unspecified way, resubmit it, and wait 24 hours to find that I had done something else wrong that needed to be fixed--all of which could have been prevented had clear instructions about format, style, and the information needed been included up front. There were several times that I was tempted to just abandon the process together, and it was really only the reputation of the journal and its ubiquity that prevented me from doing so.

  • Very good experience.  Approximately three months (over the summer) from submission to decision.  Some minor revisions requested, and I had the final acceptance within six months of initial submission.  The article appeared less than six months later (i.e. approx. eleven months from submission to publication).
  • Also a good experience. Submitted in September. Received a Revise & Resubmit in January. Resubmitted in February and received final acceptance in April.
  • Submitted in August. Followed up in February. Editors indicated the reviewers hadn't responded for four months, but they did not tell me. They offered to send it out again, I agreed, and hear back in June. The editor eventually offered great feedback himself.

The Journal of American-East Asian Relations | Journal Web Site

  • Emailed the editor after initial three months but received no reply.  I waited another two months and emailed. Still no response. I finally withdrew my manuscript and still no reponse! They probably never sent out the manuscript to reviewers in the first place. Would effective and timely communication kill them? I could wait longer as long as the journal informed me of something, some kind of communication, even to say that they could not find reviewers or they had to switch reviewers, etc.

  • Terribly slow process from submission to publication. It took 2 years and 8 months from submission to (online) publication - with only very minor revisions. Still no word on when it will be out in print because of an apparently large backlog in the queue. By now the research is old; I wish I published in a journal with a quicker turn around.
  • Agree with above. Article reviews were very slow to come in, and there was a lack of response from editorial team to queries. Although the journal is highly rated in the field, I would not recommend publishing there if you would like to see your article in print in under 2 years

Journal of Southeast Asian Studies | Journal Web Site

  • Took the journal about a month to find reviewers and 9.5 months after that to get back with the reviewers' reports. There was no online submission system to keep track of status so, I sent a inquiry email after 6 months and another after 9 months and these emails were completely ignored without even a polite acknowledgement. The reports were not terribly detailed. Outcome was a reject and resubmit with resubmissions required within 6 weeks. Certainly not the worst experience but hardly a good one.

  • Very positive experience as a young scholar. Asked to do an "internal R & R" since they liked the piece (what I sent them originally might not have survived the reviewers). After my initial revisions, it went out to the reviewers, who were both helpful (once was nice, the other mean but sharp). The journal's purview is opening up and it isn't just early modern stuff anymore, so don't hesitate with 20th c material. Truly grateful to the editor for seeing the potential in my work instead of just rejecting it.

  • Excellent journal to work with. I got reader reports within 2-3 months of submission, and my article was accepted after one round of edits. The editor was very hands on (in a productive way) during the publication process, and the turnaround on copy editing was very fast. It's a smaller journal, but they care deeply about their product, and their academic footprint is on the rise.

  • Submitted an article, heard nothing back. E-mailed six months later and got no reply. Wrote again on paper three months later, then another three months, and got the same. Then e-mailed to advise that I was withdrawing my submission since another journal had asked for it, and immediately got a profuse apology for not having any record of either receiving the article nor my several queries about its status. Registered mail seems to be the way to go with these people.

  • my submission entered the electronic system in early 2010; 2 yrs later there has been no movement; my impression is that this is a dead journal as far as unsolicited submissions go, or maybe my area was too obscure
  • I had the same experience. My impression was of a chaotic editorial process. I was promised copies of the referees' reports, but have not received any.

  • Fantastic experience. 3 months to hear about revise & resubmit with two detailed readers' reports. Given 6 months to resubmit. Resubmitted around 6 months later, heard within two days of acceptance. Received copy edits within 5 days. Very courteous, prompt, and professional.

By far the best publishing experience I've had. Although there was a slight delay in the manuscript's review (due to the lack of availability of reviewers), the editors were friendly, responsive, honest, and proactive about the situation. Comments were professional and clear, and editorial remarks strengthened the piece. The projected copyediting turnaround is phenomenal. The entire process has been a collegial delight.
